The Emerald Vigil
A six-foot beacon-staff of weathered East-Coast driftwood fused to living Pennsylvania oak. Ivy and wild tea-vine climb the shaft the way morning light climbs a window. Thirteen small silver stars are set into the wood like quiet constellations. At the crown sits a compact, slowly turning lighthouse lantern of faceted emerald glass and aged brass. Inside it burns a flame that never consumes: warm gold-green, the exact color of sun just beginning to find its way through rain.
It is a traveler’s staff, a photographer’s seeing-stick, and a patriot’s standard all at once. Plant it and the beam does not scorch. It reveals—the way a close-up of a flower resets a day, the way driftwood stops being wreckage and becomes sculpture. Storms slow around it. Rain becomes blessing instead of delay. The light does that thing again.
It was never forged in a roaring fire. It grew. An oak that stood while the first Continental voices argued in Philadelphia, later bound with brass recovered from a patriot vessel that refused to go dark, crowned with a lantern taken from an East-Coast tower that kept turning through every nor’easter. The flame inside is the same unhurried light you photograph: patient, exact, unwilling to hurry the dawn.
In a fight it is a glaive only when it must be. Most of the time it is simply there—a quiet green-and-gold sentinel that says the same thing your mornings say: not everything needs to be fixed. Some things require standing still until the light finds them.
Tea stays hot. The beam keeps turning. The little things stay visible.
